New York Says Yes to Medical Marijuana

medical-marijuana-symbolThis week, New York has become another U.S. state to allow the use of medical marijuana. Eight dispensaries have opened so far, each supplying a variety of tinctures, vapors, concentrates and other forms of the drug. How many patients will acquire services from the dispensaries is still unknown. Last Thursday, New York’s Department of Health stated that 51 patients have been approved to receive services. New York is a late comer to the medical marijuana arena, joining states like Montana and California, which legalized medical medicine in 1996.

Thus far, New York’s program only allows for medical marijuana for certified patients that have H.I.V./AIDS, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathies, Huntington’s disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, intractable spasticity, and inflammatory bowel disease.

New York’s medical marijuana marketplace was the result of years of lobbying and debate. Supporters believed that bringing medical marijuana into New York would be a lifesaving decision for patients who need the drug to fight debilitating illnesses. Even after legalization, opponents demanded strict regulations that limited how many dispensaries are allowed within the state and how the drug is used. For now, New York is only allowed to have 20 locations and patients are not allowed to smoke the drug within state lines.

Some wonder why it has taken New York so long to legalize medical marijuana. But the state is home to the 1970s Rockefeller drug laws, which harshly penalize drug use and drug users. In 2014, Governor Cuomo brokered a deal to legalize marijuana for medical use at the end of the 2014 legislative session. But the bill still places a number of restraints on dispensaries, allowing the state to “pull the plug” on operations at any time if public health or safety are jeopardized. All eyes are on New York as patients start to receive products for treatment. Some hoping that the process goes smoothly, and others hoping it vanishes in smoke.

Marijuana Merchant Account (MMA) offers a variety of marijuana payment solutions like debit cards, credit cards, checks, and more. We provide a variety of marijuana merchant account services for law abiding dispensaries.

Democratic Presidential Candidate Sanders Presses Senate to Legalize Marijuana

Posted on December 9, 2015 by admin

Bernie_Sanders_portrait_1Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont is pushing his fellow senators to legalize marijuana nationwide. While this isn’t a shock due to Senator Sanders views, it does show that the American people may be ready for a change. Sanders is rising in the polls in many states, and his message is coming across loud and clear. While the bill seems promising, there is a catch involved.

Senator Sanders bill looks to federally legalize the drug, but allow states to decide if it will be legal in a medicinal or recreational fashion. According to Senator Sanders, “In my view, the time is long overdue for us to remove the federal prohibition on marijuana. In my view, states should have the right to regulate marijuana the same way that state and local laws now govern the sale of alcohol and tobacco.” Oregon is the most recent state to decriminalize the drug, when sales started back on October 1st. While many argue that pot is harmless, others argue that it is a gateway drug. Doctors, users, an scientists have argued for years – and will continue their arguments – in support or opposition. The fact is simply this: More and more states and legalizing the drug in some form, and it is lucrative. In this country, money talks, and when the tax revenues go up, more states may take notice and look to legalize the drug.

Sanders bill would have a huge effect not only for those looking to buy legal pot, but also for those who are selling legal pot. Marijuana merchant account services would have an easier time accepting payments if his bill passes and is signed into law. Currently, card companies are processed through banks, and banks are controlled by the government. Since marijuana is currently a federally illegal substance, these companies have issues processing check, credit, and debit card payments. This leaves many with “Cash Only” businesses which are hazardous and typically do not bring in as much business as those who do accept checks and plastic card payments. Merchants need to make sure that their merchant accounts are housed by a company that is experienced with legalized marijuana sales, like marijuana-merchant-account.com. This is a hard industry to contend in, and your best shot at succeeding in its ever-changing world is to make sure that your marijuana merchant account provider is the working to educate you to these changes, and supports you along the way.

Tips for Hiring Marijuana Dispensary Staff

Training-Dispensary-Staff-TipsAll shops need staffing. From automotive shops to doll shops, and yes, even pot shops, good staff makes all the difference in keeping business and losing business. In our social media-driven world, one bad review can topple your business, thanks to Yelp and other review apps and websites. However, if you operate a high risk shop, such as a pot shop, finding good, reliable staff can be hard. Many times, those interested in working are interested in the goods, which may seem like a good idea. However, if all your employee wants to do it smoke up on a break, this can bring bad vibes to your business. You need someone who knows about the product, but is also professional.

Actually, one of the best things that you can do is not to rely on those who come to you. Advertise, ask around, and get the word out about your budding business. Don’t just rely on those who keep up on the local pot shop news, but advertise to those who are looking for traditional retail jobs. More than likely, these candidates will have more experience, and are looking for a retail job – and not strictly a job in a pot shop. Another genre that you should search out are food service workers. These workers are experienced with food safety, which is set to be a major player in the pot shop industry.

Also, do not skimp on training. Even if your employees have previously worked in pot shops, you need to go over training for your business. Every business is different, and you need to make sure that everyone is on the same page. From product to sales to marijuana merchant account services, your staff needs to know what is going on with your business. Training can be tough and long, but it is well worth it for your business.

Pot shops are lucrative, but one bad review can ruin your business. You need to be sure that your staff is right for your business, and that they are properly trained. It doesn’t take much more than time and dedication to ensure that your business booms in no time.

Merchant Account Services Offer Marijuana Growers Relief

Posted on September 23, 2015 by admin

Marijuana Merchant ProcessingAs fires rage across the U.S., it isn’t just farmers and ranchers that are being affected. The marijuana industry is also struggling with the devastating effects of wildfire season. While some growers have been spared from the fires, others have not been so fortunate.

At the beginning of September, 65 fires were reported to be raging across the U.S. The fires were also reported to have claimed over 8 million acres of land. The states particularly affected by these fires are Montana, California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho. One of the most destructive fires, located in Northern California, claimed at least 585 homes and hundreds of other structures.

These fires, paired with the present drought situation, have made things very bleak for those whose livelihoods depend on the land located in these areas. For those affected, water has become more than a necessity. It is now a luxury. For the state of California, 2015 is the fourth year of record breaking drought. Governor Jerry Brown declared a drought State of Emergency in January 2015, which was accompanied by strict conservation measures statewide.

Timothy Anderson is the purchasing manager for Harborside Health Center. A medical marijuana dispensary based out of Oakland California. According to Anderson, the majority of his suppliers are located in the lower end of what is known as the Emerald Triangle. The Emerald Triangle is an area comprising three counties at the tip of Northern California. It is known for producing some of the country’s best buds; such as, strains like Mendocino Purps and Humboldt Headband. The economy of the Emerald Triangle really depends on the marijuana growers and their reputation for producing these popular strains.

With road closures, it has been difficult for suppliers to get their product to market. Other suppliers are situated in the midst of the blaze’s danger zone. However, many of these brave growers refuse to leave their farms. Not only would they be leaving it to the mercy of the fires, but also to neglect. The drought issue requires irrigation lines and reservoirs to be monitored continuously.

There are also many indirect affects that the wildfires have had on marijuana growth. For one, smoke has become a real problem. Residual smoke can seep into the marijuana plant’s flowers, causing the smell and taste of the weed to be altered. The smoke also blocks the light, causing the plants to flower too early.

The devastating fires are not the only hurtle that the marijuana industry is dealing with. Marijuana businesses are struggling all the way to the bank. Even though the sale of marijuana may be legal in some of the states, as far as the banks are concerned, the money is from illegal drug money – they won’t touch it. Marijuana is still listed as a Schedule I drug and is therefore illegal on the federal level.

As a result, marijuana businesses are forced to deal only in cash, which is obviously not practical or safe. Unless Congress steps in and changes federal drug and drug-trafficking laws, this will continue to be a roadblock for businesses. In order to operate safely, marijuana businesses really need to be able to secure payment processing.

Thankfully, high risk payment processors have stepped in to fill this gap. A marijuana merchant account is specifically tailored to meet the needs of a marijuana businesses. A marijuana merchant account allows a business to process all of its credit card payments for a low rate and in a safe and secure manner. In addition, unlike all of the red tape experienced when applying with a traditional source, applying for a marijuana merchant account is fast, simple and hassle-free.
